Rob Dufour - The Jacket

The Jacket was an incredibly intriguing movie, and it honestly kept me thinking and picking my brain throughout its entirety. I kept trying to play with the huge loop of events that had to take place in order for other events to take place, it definitely messed with me but it was fun. Throughout a good part of the movie I thought it was trying to say that our future is predestined, which could be seen by Jack Starks finding out pertinent information about the future by living in it momentarily, and then because of this information taken into account in present day, the aforementioned future is allowed to proceed exactly as he once saw it. However this takes a strange turn when Jack is able to visit little Jackie and her mom after Jackie tells Jack her address in the future, and Jack straightens out the mom which then changes the course of both of their lives. One of the problems I saw was that it was only after Jack delivered the note to the mom that she and Jackie were truly cognizant of Jack and his life, which is how they knew he died on New Years. But initially when Jack meets Jackie in her run down home, she still knows that he died on New Years Day, but she would not have known that if he didn’t visit her and her mom on that day with the note that changed her from living that life.
One of the lines I really picked up on was when Jack says that “sometimes life can only really begin with the knowledge of death.” I think this provides certain implications as to how some people live their lives ignorant to the promise of death and let their life pass them by, but also how some live with the knowledge of death looming over them, almost as to keep them from enjoying the present. This line does refer to his experience with knowing of his own death, and the actions he took to make those last three days worthy of the last days he spent alive. Also, when the mother found out that if she didn’t change her life she would soon die, and because of her learning of a possible death, she finally began to live a life worth living.

Rob Dufour - Bunny and The Wall

Instead of copying someone else’s thoughts or completely making up my own, I will be honest: I had no clue what was happening during The Wall, absolutely none. The majority of the time I was disturbed by the images and sounds, and when I thought I was starting to make sense of something, a new image or a trippy scenery popped up that threw me for a whole new loop. The only thing I actually enjoyed about it were the few sane songs that Pink Floyd had within the movie – the rest of it, quite frankly, made me uncomfortable. Maybe that’s the point, I have no idea, or maybe I should start doing drugs so I can pretend to understand what was happening in that movie. On second thought I think I’m better off without either.

Now, Bunny, was a short flick in which I definitely came away gaining and understanding something from it. The first thing I noticed was the idea of going towards the light, which is so commonly found in biblical scripture. The light is thought to show the way towards truth, and we see in this short film the bug flying towards any light it can find. We are left to wonder why that bug is so enthralled with the light. It was also interesting to see that the bug led the bunny towards the light, and this light led the way to what we can assume is heaven because the bunny grew wings and peacefully floated closer to the light source. Another thing I took away from this movie was the importance of music in a film without speaking. When the bunny was first startled by the light in the stove she was trembling and the music that was playing was slightly scary and mysterious. I would be shaken up if a light was protruding out of my stove too, but I think that this can represent the fear many of us have stemming from this ultimate mystery. Then as the bunny starts to comprehend what is happening and accepts what is about to take place, the fear turns to interest, and the music changes into a more intriguing tune with a hint of discovery to the melody, because now she wants to find out more and see what the light has in store for her. Then as the bunny makes in into the oven and heads toward the light, the music turns into a hymn sounding song, which to me tells us that she is on her way towards heaven and to be with God

precision of language

I am reading The Giver which is the sci-fi book that the movie Equilibrium was based off of. If you are not familiar with either the basis of the story is people do not really feel anything and take medicine to prevent them from feeling so that everything has a “sameness.” This exert from the book is between Jonas, a boy who has been specially selected to have feelings and does not take the meds, and his parents who are.

“Do you love me?”
There was an awkward silence for a moment. Then Father gave a little chuckle. “Jonas. You, of all people. Precision of language, please!”
“what do you mean?” Jonas asked.
… “Your father means that you used a very generalized word, so meaningless that it’s become almost obsolete,” his mother explained carefully.
… “You could ask, ‘Do you enjoy me?’… ‘Do you take pride in my accomplishments?’”
… “Do you understand why it’s inappropriate to use a word like ‘love’?”

I found this kind of funny after we have been discussing love in class after viewing Babette’s Feast. I almost feel as if love has already become obsolete in our society. We say it all the time whether it’s in the bottom of our away messages, through facebook bumper stickers, or just in random conversation saying “I heart you.” I think we, and definitely myself included, misuse the word love and take its real meaning for granted. I almost wish we had different genres of love like the Greeks so that we would understand it better, take it more seriously, and not throw it around. To our friends we would say “I Eros you!” and to the people we truly feel a strong “love” for such as a spouse, family member, or a really close friend, we would say “I Agape you.” knowing it truly meant we would give our all and our lives for that person. It would only be used in the most intimate moments with that person and not used lightly in away messages.

WHAT YOU READ, WHY YOU READ
No: 2

I like to read some stories, but right now I focus on reading all of the information for my class “Religion in the movie.” The books I especially read are The Idea of the Holy, Aesthetics of Film, Transcendental Style in Film and all the information related to my class.
I read to build up my knowledge and also to improve my lesson. Every book has different stories and they are all interesting. Some story let me learn some experience that I can use for my life. Some stories made me happy that I can get out of the stress from my job.
A long time ago I read for fun. I found some good stories book to read for my children. I also found some histories to read for learning some things I need to know. Sometimes I read newspaper for learning news.
Reading always helps people to build up the knowledge and learning some new things. I like to read any way not only for my lesson but also for better knowledge. If you like to build up your knowledge, you must read what you need.
