Brock Hughes--The Jacket

I have to be honest. I was pretty happy that we were watching a movie where I didn’t have to read subtitles. I was even more excited that we were watching a movie with Kierra Knightley in it because let’s face it, she is a babe. I found it very interesting that Adrienne Brodie’s character started out very selfish in nature and became altruistic as the movie went on with the motivations and actions he took. This movie in that sense is very much like Bruce Almighty. There was a lot of symbolism in this movie and was really interesting. First off, Knightley’s character was named Angel, which means messenger; she was the messenger for Adrienne Brodie to figure out what was going on and how he would get out of the situation he was in. It was also interesting that he was placed in a morgue box because that is a place of death but became a place of life and hope because he was able to make changes and transcend the times.

He was also in a sense between worlds, luminal, while in the tomb. This is similar to Christ when He was also in the tomb. The fact that it was winter was very interesting beause of all the white snow around him and everywhere. Snow is an image of purity but more specifically after snow melts and spring comes there is a fresh start. Once he was able to go to a future time he also gave himself a new start which is very interesting.

There is a quote in the movie that says you “Can’t live until you die.” This is an idea that represents Christianity because one must die of themselves in order to gain life in Christ. In other words, you have to not care or worry about yourself as much as you do others. This is an interesting concept to me because in this world is believed to be an oxymoron and the quote cannot be understood based on earthly terms. Much like Christianity in itself, you have to accept it with faith because reason and logic is not going to explain it.
