In The Jacket there was the idea of axis mundi, which is the center of the universe, which connects the things it goes through. In the movie, the axis mundi was the body drawer that Jack Starks is locked in as part of his inhumane treatment at an asylum. Every time he enters the drawer he is taken to the future, where he is dead, which allows him to change the present to help Jackie Price, a girl he meets on the road.
The idea of the axis mundi is something that I've discussed in another one of my classes, my art history class. We've discussed it in relation to Buddhist architecture. There are buildings called stupas, where pieces of Buddha were supposedly buried, where the axis mundi runs right through the center of the dome. Also, there are temples where the axis mundi runs right through the tallest tower. They believed that the axis mundi connected the cosmic waters to the celestial realm and anchored everything where it was supposed to be.
If the axis mundi does connect the earthly world to a celestial realm, that could be the reason the Starks was able to travel through time when he was in the body drawer. It could be that the connection between the two realms allows someone to do something supernatural.
