A couple of weeks ago at Intervarsity’s large group there was a speaker who was talking to us about the subject of heaven. According to the bible, when Christians die and Christ has returned to earth we will be given new physical bodies and a new physical earth to live on. The speaker was explaining that all of creation is yearning and aching for this moment and when we are transformed and the curse of sin is lifted, all of nature around us will be as well. He asked us if we had heard of a movie called Beauty and the Beast and used it as an example. In one of the final scenes when Bell tells the Beast she loves him, he is lifted up with light shooting out of him and become human again. His curse is lifted and he is now free. Suddenly the entire mansion begins to change into its former self; what it was meant to be. This is symbolic of the new creation and how everything will be resurrected/brought back to life because it is finally free.
Another story that uses this same symbolism (although intentional) is The chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle, which is the last installment in the series of books. Warning, this is a spoiler for those who have not read the series! In the end Narnia is “destroyed” and everyone is taken to “Aslan’s country” which is the “real Narnia.” It is described as looking like Narnia in every way, but is not the old Narnia at the same time. Everything is brighter and finally feels like home to all the creatures living there; there is no more yearning for a greater place and creation is finally free of its curse.
