Team America is easily one of my favorite political satire films. The creators of South Park were able to bring up many issues which are simply sidestepped in American political commentary, such as America’s complete disregard for any international regulations. America seems to have in its head that the only way to be a superpower is to force its views on other people. With this, the country has abstained from important international institutions such as the International Criminal Court. In doing so, America is alienating its allies and its enemies, though the latter to a lesser degree.
The fact that the issues brought up in America must be done through comedy also speaks volumes about the political discourse in the country. Both republicans and democrats, though I will say with obvious bias that I feel republicans are much better at this, constantly play games with words in order veil the true meanings of their comments. Also, this specifically at the Neo-Conservative wing of the Republican party, has hijacked the idea of Patriotism. As a liberal, I will end in saying that I will never understand how Bush can be called patriotic while he usurps freedom from the American people, but Barack Obama is attacked for not wearing a lapel pin.
