Ben Ash - Reading Blog 4 - John Irving

One of my favorite authors of all time has to be John Irving. The first book of his that I read was The World According to Garp. The other book which I have read, as of right now, is the one I just finished; The Cider House Rules. While I am typically inclined to read mindless action books or fantasy books, John Irvings’ liberal novels and writing style are something I cannot escape.
Garp is probably my favorite novel of all time for an odd reason, however. During the school year of 2005-2006, I attended Virginia Tech. To put it plainly, life sucked for that year. All of the friends I had went to CNU and I was pretty much alone, only contacting my friends through instant message. The friend who told me about Garp, however, was one of the best friends I have ever had. She once told me that I should “Smile all the time, even when you have to fake it. Sometimes, you forget you are faking it.” This philosophy helped me get through many a rough time at VA Tech and I think I love Garp so much because I admired her so much.
