Borat is a strange movie about a fictional Kazakhstani journalist who wants to know more about America. His plan is to learn about America and bring back ideas for social reform. The main part of this movie I want to touch on is Borat's experience with a Church in the film. Borat is lonely and depressed after finding out that Pamela Anderson is not a virgin so he travels aimlessly towards California. He ends up sleeping in front of a church where incoming members welcome him in. The church service was anything but normal. There was jumping, screaming, flailing arms and crazy people falsely speaking in tongues. This pentecostal church was on an emotional roller coaster and Borat was ready to play along and ride. As it turned out this quite literally came true as he and Mr. Jesus' friends took a bus to California. What I would like to comment on is the view of the church in the film. Unfortunately, many might take this comedic point of view of Christian churches and be turned off. I know I was laughing when I saw the absurdity of the crazy men and women convulsing but I left the movie theatre feeling disheartened after watching hours of cheap humor. The reality is that there are crazy churches like this around in the world and I have been witness to a few of them but for those who have never read the Bible and know what it's contents are about then this film can be detrimental. I like a good laugh but not at the expense of people's eternal destination.
