Jessie Gambardella - The Truth Teller

If you have not heard it by now, the film The Golden Compass and the books it was based off of are said to be a rebuttal to C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. It is no secret that Philip Pullman is an atheist and despises Christianity which is fine and nothing new. He claims to hate Narnia and yet his books use the same concepts of other worlds, talking animals, battles with “evil” and so on. He also claims that his books are about killing God and what not. Tons of people boycotted the movie because of Pullman’s claims but I honestly could not wait to see it; I love anything fantasy. Going into the movie I knew that it was “anti-God” and all so of course I looked for little things that would portray this believe and honestly, I did not find very much. I have not read the books so I do not know how “anti” they are although I’m sure they go into more depth.

I am assuming that Pullman uses the Nicole Kidman’s character who leads the religious group, Magisterium, is the “bad guy” and represents Christianity. The little girl Lyra who control the Golden Compass and her companions are the non-Christians I suppose. There is also a Dust substance that runs through all the worlds that the Magisterium are trying to dispose of; I’m not exactly sure what the Dust is suppose to represent, any takers? She uses the golden compass as a “truth teller” and is kind of like a magic 8-ball that works. The Magisterium are like a dictatorship and really are evil and I would be opposed to them as well. I don’t see how this relates to Christianity in that God is in no way a dictator and definitely not an evil on at that. It is interesting too that Lyra uses this “truth teller” and Jesus describes himself as the “Way, Truth and the Life” and steers us in the right direction. So this is fairly pro-Jesus if looked at this way. I have not seen the film in a while so there are probably lots of other stuff I’m forgetting to mention but either way it was a good film (although slightly anti-climactic) and I would recommend to all.
