Ben Ash - Reading Blog 3 - Aliens in America

The book Aliens in America by Peter Lawler is, in my opinion, a great commentary on American culture today. One thing that he addresses is the idea of “Cafeteria Christianity.” This refers to the Christians who are a Christian when it is convenient, but the rest of the time they don’t really embrace doctrine. To me, this sums up a solid majority of the Christian population, especially the college aged crowd. Christianity today, for me at least, seems like a catch phrase and a way to give off the air of being moral without actually putting in the work.
One quote I recall from a friend is that of “I am too Lutheran to hold a grudge.” While this quote is laughable in its nature to me, the source made it even better. A friend of mine who, though I do love as a friend, is not what I would describe as a model Christian said this. Lacking compassion for anyone else, as well as fully embracing a solid number of the 7 deadly sins, I found it funny that the only reason my friend didn’t want to hold a grudge was due to his being Lutheran. For me, I just call that being a good person and I don’t need an imaginary friend in the sky to make me do that.
