Last weekend was a very interesting weekend for me indeed. First, for some oddball reason, I decided to sacrifice my Saturday to wake up at 6 A.M. and work. If this wasn’t enough, it was a conference for local writers and, not being mean, but they aren’t the most interesting bunch at 7 A.M. Following that, I was stationed with a group of religious books which was the pinnacle of irony, considering who I was there with.
Eventually, a few fellow student workers and I were talking and somehow stumbled on the topic of religion. While I love debating this topic, it turns out that it isn’t the most appropriate (or legal) topic to discuss with your boss.
The turning point occurred, however, when word leaked out that I was an Atheist. Almost everyone just stared at me like I had punched a baby. The discussion then went from a philosophical debate on a range of topics to simply why I was (and shouldn’t be) an Atheist. While I was perfectly fine with this, as I am used to people trying to tell me why I am going to a place I don’t even believe in, I didn’t appreciate being ostracized for simply believing in something different.
