When the movie Northfork introduced polygamy with the man who built an ark and after watchign Zardoz I could not help but begin to think about Mormonism. Now, I have some close friends that are Mormons and I have even gone with them to their church (and f.y.i. if you’re a female, don’t make the mistake of wearing pants, girls only wear skirts). All Mormons claim to be Christians and claim to be a branch of Christianity even though almost all denominations of Christianity denounce Mormonism. A lot of people do not know some of the major differences each “religion” has; differences that would make you think they had nothing in common. First, Mormons believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers and of course there was a family dispute that did not end well for Satan. This is definitely not something the Christian Church believes. I got into the discussion of Adam and Even with one of my Mormon friends and she said that we, people, are the result of Adam and Eve’s sin; they were to be the only ones God created the earth for. I had to ask then why God created a man and a woman with particular reproductive parts and same thing with animals?
I went to a couple of “family” meetings which is similar to Sunday school where a Mormon character’s story is told. These are preached out of one of the many books of Mormonism; the Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price. The Bible is considered a sacred text but it is equal if not lesser than the other books and the current president of Mormonism is said to be a prophet. Anything he says is considered sacred and authoritative, although many prophesy’s said by the president have been wrong and their doctrine has had to change to correspond to current happenings. Several passages from the Bible conflict with some of Joseph Smith’s teachings such as God wasn’t always a “god” and that there is a “heavenly Mother.” This is completely against Christian teaching and the teachings of the Bible where only the Trinity, Father, Spirit, and Son, are spoken of; no heavenly mother. Mormons do believe that Christ came as atonement for our sins which does correspond with Christianity major and is the whole point of Christianity except in Mormonism salvation can be achieved if you also believe in Joseph Smith. Also baptisms can be performed on the dead to ensure their salvation in “endowment ceremonies.” What goes on in the Mormon temple is creepy and in no way correspond with the teachings of Christ and to any sane person should be a giant red flag of “hey I’m joining a cult!”
