Ben Ash - Reading Blog 2 - Letter to a Christian Nation

While it is one of the only Atheist books I have read, Sam Harris’s Letter to a Christian Nation has fast become one of my favorite books. In this book, he uses Biblical examples to show some of the less known and more distasteful aspects of religion which are commonly overlooked. In one of my favorite parts, he asks a group of children if they think a war against the people of a different land (and religion) is justified, and the answer was a resounding yes. When religion was removed, however, the answer became the opposite. In this respect, I find that religion has accomplished something terrible, it has justified the reprehensible.
He also points out an argument which I have espoused for a long time too. If there are in fact Christians which only believe in God for the “just in case” scenario, how is that not something to be viewed with contempt. Saying you believe in God just to get a reward is, in my eyes, worse than saying you don’t believe in God. I see myself as a moral Atheist and I can’t put any faith in someone who only believes in God so as to escape possible punishment and get into the gated community in the sky.
